Development Associate
Summary: The Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF) is a nonprofit college preparatory and youth leadership organization. We are currently seeking a Development Associate to provide support to all fundraising activities including but not limited to grant-writing and grants management, database management, prospect research, communications and social media, and special events. Ideal candidates should have demonstrated development and fundraising experience, exceptional written and spoken communications skills, be entrepreneurial and great team players. Job Requirements: • Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence. • Maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files and databases. • Assist with administrative details for events. • Prepare media materials for distribution. • Manage HEAF’s online and print communications projects and social media outreach. • Create monthly fundraising and other reports executive staff and board committees. • Conduct research on prospective corporate foundation and individual donors. • Coordinate print media including year-end appeal letters and the annual report. • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Development and President Additional Qualifications: • Bachelor's Degree Required • Minimum three years' experience in a not-for-profit development office. • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. • Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to organize and prioritize work. • Ability to work independently with limited supervision. • Exceptional interpersonal skills. • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Database management experience – eTapestry preferred. • Social media experience a plus. College Prep Classroom Volunteers
Mission: HEAF is an education and youth leadership organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school, career and life. HEAF identifies students in middle school and supports them until they are successfully graduated from four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs. Position Description: As a College Prep volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work closely with college-bound students through the exciting and challenging time of college applications. HEAF high school seniors attend a weekly Senior Seminar designed to prepare them for the college application process and, ultimately, the transition into college. HEAF College Prep volunteers will provide guidance and support for students during these sessions in a variety of capacities. Volunteer Responsibilities: • Facilitating workshops on college application components • Providing one-on-one assistance to students on their college applications and essays • Leading discussions on topics surrounding the transition into college Volunteer Requirements: • Knowledge of the college application process • Strong editing and writing • Interest in working with our students in a variety of capacities Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 pm. College Quest Volunteer Tutors (Grades 9-12)
Mission: HEAF is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school, career and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs. Position Description: HEAF is currently recruiting volunteers to tutor high school students in a variety of academic subjects. In addition to the core subjects, there is a particular need for tutors in Math, the Sciences, and Foreign Languages. Volunteer Responsibilities: • Assess and assist students in at least one of the core subjects • Assist students with test preparation • Document and report student progress Volunteer Requirements: • Advanced skills in specialized subject matter • Experience working with middle school or high school students • Excellent attendance and punctuality • Strong interpersonal skills • Ability to work collaboratively with the HEAF staff • Willingness to promote HEAF educational and youth development philosophy Time Commitment: • Flexible schedule • At least one hour, once per week Training: All volunteers will be required to attend an orientation session. The orientation will address HEAF’s policies, and procedures, adolescent development and working with youth. Additionally, volunteers will learn effective tutoring skills. Writing Instructor (Grades 9-11)
Mission: HEAF is a comprehensive supplemental education and youth development organization that works to help motivated students develop the intellectual curiosity, academic ability, social values and personal resiliency they need to ensure success in school, career and life. HEAF identifies scholars in middle school and supports them until they are successfully admitted to four-year colleges through a variety of after-school, Saturday and summer educational and youth development programs. Program Description: • Fall Semester: September through December • Once per week, Tuesday and/or Wednesday, after-school hours 4:00 pm – 7:00pm • Academic Enrichment and Acceleration in English/Writing Teacher Summary: Academic Elective teachers develop and implement student-centered, interactive English/Writing classes that culminate in group projects and/or presentations. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. Teachers document and assess student progress throughout the semester-long program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential. Classes will focus on developing a critical essay and the writing process, including editing, peer review and constructive feedback. Sample courses include, Voting Counts: Election 2008, Harlem’s Inconvenient Truth, and Extra, Extra! Though math and English will be taught separately, collaboration between instructors will be necessary in order to help students make connections across the curricula. The ideal candidates will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area using creative and innovative methods. The ideal candidate will be able to utilize progressive didactic, coaching and discussion instruction models to teach content area. Additionally, he/she will use creative and innovative methods during classroom instruction as well as document and assess student progress throughout the semester-long program. The ability to create a safe and rich learning environment is essential. Class topics include inequities in education, the impact of such inequities on young people, and the development of youth initiated action plans to raise awareness and provide community solutions.
