| January 2010 Welcome to E-NEWS FROM HEAF, a monthly news brief about what’s happening at HEAF. Working Hard for HEAF and their Futures: The HEAF Grade-a-Thon Last year, current 12th grader Justin's grades brought in $320 for HEAF, and current 10th grader Jumaanah raised a whopping $370! HEAF students launched the second-annual HEAF Grade-A-Thon in November and asked their families and friends to support their good grades by donating to HEAF. Each sponsor agrees to donate $5.00 for every A and $3.00 for every B that a HEAF student earns on his/her best report card between November 2009 and March 2010. Their goal is to raise funds in support of scholarships, college tours, service trips, and other HEAF activities. Last year 15 students in the Learning for Social Impact class "New Orleans: Journey along the Mississippi" raised close to $3,000. This year, we are expanding the program to include all students in all grades. If you’d like more information or would like to sponsor a student, just let us know. We’ll keep you posted on their progress! P.S. We’d also like to give a shout out to HEAF alum Gabriel Felix, who left for Haiti on January 15th to do relief work with the Army Corps of Engineers. Good luck and hats off to you, Gabriel! | |

| November 2009 Welcome to E-NEWS FROM HEAF, a monthly news brief about what’s happening at HEAF. College Mentoring at HEAF It's that time of year again! College application deadlines loom big for high school seniors. At HEAF, they are busy finalizing their college lists and working on their essays, all in preparation for sending in their college applications. But they don’t have to do it alone. In HEAF's Senior Seminar, our 12th graders learn about, discuss and prepare for their first year of college, under the tutelage of the Associate Director of College Quest and ably assisted by volunteers. Each senior also works individually with a volunteer mentor who helps with his or her college application essay and college lists. HEAF students and their mentors have been meeting since Spring of '09. Here's what some of our volunteers are saying about their work with the HEAF Seniors: "I became a mentor at HEAF because I was fortunate to have teachers and family who helped me navigate my way. So far, the most rewarding experience for me has been seeing how far my mentee has come along. She is more confident and sure of what she wants to do with her future, and I am extremely proud of her. "Being a mentor for HEAF has motivated me to serve. It is a reminder that we can exceed expectations regardless of our backgrounds, and that it is the duty of those who have become successful to 'pay it forward' by supporting younger generations who seek to do great things." - Christina, HEAF Mentor NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education & Human Development Sociology of Education Ph.D. Candidate "Volunteering at HEAF has been a wonderful experience. I had high expectations going in, having heard only raves about students at HEAF, but as the weeks went on, I found students surpassing what I predicted. Their drive to move forward, their quickness in adapting and understanding, as well as their willingness to be candid in expressing themselves have all been inspirational. I am going to set the bar high for all of my future students after seeing how much these high school seniors excel with a strong framework around them and the right people behind them." - Devek, HEAF Volunteer Media Alert! National consulting group Metis Associates highlights HEAF's High Expectations program on its website. See the article here.

| October 2009 Welcome to E-NEWS FROM HEAF, a monthly news brief about what’s happening at HEAF. HEAF's 20th Anniversary HEAF's 20th Anniversary Benefit Gala on September 30th was a huge success! We'd like to give a special thank you to everyone who helped make the Gala such a wonderful and uplifting evening. We couldn't have done it without you! The Benefit, which took place at the St. Regis in New York and honored CNN’s host Fareed Zakaria and investment and media entrepreneur, Judith Aidoo, raised over $615,000. HEAF Board Member, astrophysicist, host of PBS's “NOVAscience NOW,” and the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil DeGrasse Tyson wowed the crowd by leading HEAF students Octavia, Na'il, Justin, Fakoneiry, and Jahlil, and the audience in an interactive game titled, "The Cosmic Challenge." The evening elicited a wonderful article by Deroy Murdock, syndicated columnist for the Scripps Howard News Service. Read the article here.
We thank you for believing in our kids!
