Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF) cordially invites you to attend Viva La Cultura — a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and the 2018-2019 Learning through Social Impact (LSI) program.

The purpose of Viva La Cultura is to celebrate LatinX history and culture, to illuminate the connection between travel and cultural literacy, and to honor the twenty-two (22) dynamic students who have been selected to participate in the 2018-2019 Learning through Social Impact program, which will include a year-long course on Latin America as well as a culminating trip to Cuba!

The event will feature Cuban-American food, music, a special guest speaker + discussion on the travel, education and critical cultural literacy.

More about LSI:
Learning for Social Impact (LSI) is a year-long class designed to engage students in activities that utilize service learning, leadership skills, and social entrepreneurship. During the course, students will deepen their knowledge of the political history, economic structures, cultural heritage, and current events of a specific city or region. The class culminates in a 1-2 week-long educational trip to the city or region studied.  This trip affords students opportunities to meet with local officials, participate in cultural activities, and collaborate with peers from a local youth organization to complete a service project based on the needs of the community. This year’s LSI cohort will study Latin America and travel to Cuba. Past LSI destinations have included Nepal, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Botswana, New Orleans, and Detroit. Since 2003, LSI has served more than 200 students.
