Personal and Professional Development Workshops

1 Day Commitment

These workshops are great opportunities for individuals to volunteer with HEAF and are perfect for those who are interested in connecting with students in a small group setting and providing unique insights into their personal educational and career path and professional field. Volunteers answer questions, provide advice, and help students understand the potential options available to them. For these workshops, we can also accommodate a small team of employees for a few select workshops.

* Please note these workshops will take place virtually via Zoom. Workshop outlines and materials will be provided one week prior to the workshop.

Wednesday, October 6 – High School Industry Career Panel – Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (HEAF High School students)
NOTE: For this workshop, we are seeking volunteers who work in the fields of technology, engineering, and mathematics
Time: 5:00 pm-6:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their career experience, how they got to where they are, a “day in the life” of their current role, and share insights and advice learned along the way

Tuesday, October 19 – College Essay Editing Workshop (12th Grade students)
Time: 4:30 pm-6:00 pm
Volunteers will edit and proofread students’ personal statement essays, a critical component of the college application process, and then share written as well as verbal feedback with them about ways they can improve.

Monday, October 25- The Intersection of Identity and Career Exploration 9th Grade Career Workshop
Time: 5:15 pm-6:15 pm
Volunteers will co-facilitate conversations with students around exploring identity, exploring career pathways, and how the two can be interconnected.

Tuesday, October 26 – Industry Immersion Reflection + Professional Portfolio Working Session (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will engage in small group discussions to identify key takeaways that they have learned so far, and how they can begin to use this experience to shape their future college a career planning

Tuesday, November 2 – Industry Immersion Networking and Leveraging Career Exploration Experiences (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about what networking means to them and share examples of how networking has helped them on their college and career journeys. Volunteers will also talk with students about their career journeys, professional experiences they had that shaped their current career trajectory, how they pivoted along the way, and lessons learned along the way

Tuesday, November 9 – Industry Immersion: Professionalism and Communication (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will work with students in small groups to practice their professional written and verbal communication skills; volunteers will provide feedback to students on how they can improve. Materials, example scenarios, and templates will be provided

Tuesday, November 9 – College Interview Mock Interview Workshop (12th Grade)
Time: 4:30 pm-6:00 pm
Volunteers will interview our 11th and 12th graders by posing questions to them that will help them to reflect on themselves and their stories and ultimately help them think creatively and more in-depth about why they are interested in attending specific colleges. Interview questions will be provided

Monday, November 22 – Advocacy, Leadership, and Civic Engagement 9th Grade Career Workshop
Time: 5:00 pm-6:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their career journey, how they learned how to be advocates for themselves, and lessons they have learned as a leader. Volunteers will also talk with students about different ways to be involved and connected with their community, sharing examples from their own personal and professional experiences.

Tuesday, November 30 – Industry Immersion Professional Development Portfolio Working Session (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will engage in small group discussions with students to identify key takeaways that they have learned so far, and how they can begin to use this experience to shape their future college and career planning.

Wednesday, December 1 – High School Career Industry Panel – Sports, The Arts & Entertainment (HEAF High School students)
Time: 5:00 pm-6:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their career experience, how they got to where they are, a “day in the life” of their current role, and share insights and advice learned along the way

Tuesday, December 7 – Industry Immersion Mentorship Panel (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their own experiences with mentorship, how they established their relationship with their mentor, and how their mentor has supported their growth and development

Monday, December 13 – Goal Setting 9th Grade Career Workshop
Time: 5:15 pm-6:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their own professional development and learning journeys and work with students on identifying their professional strengths and areas of growth and how they can set short-term professional and personal learning goals.

Tuesday, December 14 – Industry Immersion Fall Wrap-up and Transferable Skills assessment (HEAF High School students)
Time: 4:15 pm-5:15 pm
Volunteers will talk with students about their own professional development and learning journeys and work with students on identifying their professional strengths and areas of growth and how they can set short-term professional and personal learning goals.
